In August of 2012, I was off work for the day and I got a phone call from my husband in the late afternoon. I heard the words from him that literally made my heart sink, “I don’t have a job anymore and I’m on the way home”. I was in a panic. What were we going to do without his income? How was he ever going to find a job in this market? We can’t live on my salary alone! This scenario has happened to a lot of families and people in our country the last several years. It could happen to any of us at any time.
My husband being out of work initially put me in a panic as to how we would keep our house, pay the bills, put food on the table. I had to start prioritizing. Thankfully, we had some savings and we had some income from my husband’s blog. That kept us afloat but it wasn’t easy. There were many times when I thought we weren’t going to have groceries that week or what about Christmas for the kids. I’m sure some have been in this situation and it’s tough when you realize you make just enough where you don’t qualify for any financial assistance what so ever. Luckily, he found a position just after Christmas. We almost had to face it again when the government shutdown occurred and we were heading towards a furlough, luckily things were resolved there but for many families, they are now playing catch up from that event as well.
I came across this project yesterday when and it has really touched my heart. I think it is one of the best ideas that I have come across lately and I wanted to share it with as many people as possible. The project is called The Scary Mommy Thanksgiving Project. This project provides for Moms that can’t provide a Thanksgiving meal for their families. In the first year, she was able to help 400 people. Last year, she limited the project a bit and was able to help feed 200 families. This year, she is going to try to help as many people and families as she can.
I really wanted to spread the word on this project and help her to make this a huge year for helping families for Thanksgiving. Please click on over and read all about her project at Scary Mommy. Give what you are able, even if is only a few dollars it all adds up to help families.
