After weight loss surgery, you get so used to the weight dropping off fast and steady. However, there are times when you step on the scale and it has not moved one little bit. You then step on the scale the next day and again, it hasn’t moved. This is the dreaded weight loss stall and it happens to most of us who have undergone weight loss surgery. It is probably one of the most frustrating when you encounter it for the first time. However, there are a few ways to break that stall quicker than just “waiting it out”.

Vary Your Diet 

One sure fire way to break a stall is to vary your diet. You can adjust your calories a tad lower or in most cases it works better if you will adjust them up just a little bit for a few days. This tells your body that you are going to keep getting fuel so it is OK to let go off some of that stored fuel. A great way to do this is to add some additional protein shakes in t your diet for a few days. Adding more protein tends to kick start you back in to weight loss again.

I have also had some success by adding in a few more carbs. When you are going ultra low carb during the time right after surgery, your body can feel like it is not getting enough energy. It may be having a harder time converting what it needs to energy and your metabolism slows down, almost as if you are starving. If you will increase your carbs up just a little, your body will kick back in to weight loss mode.

One Krispy Kreme Doughnut

You read that correctly! One trick I learned from weight loss surgery vets is that most have had a stubborn stall and have found great success by eating one Krispy Kreme Doughnut. It really does work to break that stall. However, a word of warning. If you are going to take this route, DO NOT eat it on the way to work in the morning. This method requires you be near to a bathroom and you might have a little bit of stomach discomfort after eating this rich sweet treat. It doesn’t last long, but it really does work and as you spend some quality time in the bathroom, you will wonder why you did this to yourself but you will be thankful the next day when the stall if broken and you continue seeing that scale go down each time you weight after this step.

Increase Water

If you have gotten behind on drinking your water, increasing your water intake can help break a stall. There are times when we get behind in drinking our water and your body will start to retain fluid. Increasing your water will allow the body to release that retained fluid and you will continue on your weight loss journey.

Change Up Your Fitness Routine

Sometimes your body will get used to the fitness routine and you will see a stall in your weight loss. If you have always been walking for your exercise, switch it up by doing a work out DVD or using an elliptical at the gym instead of the treadmill. Vary your weight lifting routine as well as this will work different areas of your body and promote weight loss as well as increase muscle.
